Current Position
Daniel Racoceanu is Professor at Sorbonne University and Principal Investigator at the Paris Brain Institute, within the Inria ARAMIS team. His research lies at the intersection of biomedical image analysis, pattern recognition, machine learning, deep learning, and computational integrative pathology. He develops artificial intelligence methods for microscopy, histopathology, multimodal biomedical data integration, and explainable decision-support systems, with a particular focus on clinically meaningful and trustworthy AI.
Research Focus
His current work explores how AI can bridge tissue morphology, molecular information, and clinical interpretation. This includes computational pathology, high-content microscopy, digital histopathology, multimodal representation learning, spatial omics, virtual staining, explainability, uncertainty estimation, and human-in-the-loop approaches for translational biomedical applications.
Educational Background
He received his Ph.D. in 1997 and his Habilitation to Direct Research / HDR in 2006 from the University Marie & Louis Pasteur, Besançon, France.
Past Positions
Before joining academia, he worked as Project Manager at General Electric. In 1999, he became Associate Professor at the University Marie & Louis Pasteur and Research Fellow at FEMTO-ST Institute, CNRS UMR 6174.
From 2005 to 2014, he contributed to the creation and development of the International Joint Research Unit / Lab IPAL, UMI CNRS 2955, in Singapore. From 2008 to 2014, he served as Director of this joint research venture between Sorbonne University, CNRS, the National University of Singapore, and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research.
From 2009 to 2015, he was Professor at the School of Computing, National University of Singapore. From 2014 to 2016, he was Professor at Pierre and Marie Curie University, member of the Executive Board of the University Institute of Health Engineering of Sorbonne University, and co-Director of the Cancer Theranostics research team at the Bioimaging Lab, CNRS UMR 7371 / Inserm U1146.
From 2016 to 2018, he was Professor in Biomedical Image and Data Analytics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru.
Scientific Responsibilities
Daniel Racoceanu is co-founder of the European Society for Digital and Integrative Pathology, where he served as Vice-President from 2016 to 2018 and President from 2018 to 2020. He has been a member of its Advisory Board since 2020.
From 2018 to 2022, he served on the Board of Directors of the Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention Society. He was General Chair of MICCAI 2020 in Lima, Peru, and contributed to the organization of MICCAI 2021 in Strasbourg and MICCAI 2022 in Singapore.
